Suzuki VStrom Headlight Improvements
My VStrom headlights, although dual, appeared less than what they should have been at night. The answer has been to route some of the headlight wiring through a couple of relays and reduce the load carried by metres of light cable and some switches.
Here are some photos of the work.
The two relays are mounted where the ABS ones would normally be. Just behind the battery. One relay for low beam and one for high beam.
Pull the fuse box off it's mounts to gain access to the wiring. You can see the wiring inserted here with shrink wrap covers over the soldered joins.
Here is the plan.
You need to pull the fuse box from its rubber mounts and attempt to turn it over. I cut the W/Bl and Y/Bl wires going to the fuse 1 & 2.
I used those incoming wires to power the relay coils. Then the relay contacts (output) are connected to the W/Bl and Y/Bl wires going into the fuse box. The Y and W wires coming out of the fuse box run directly to the headlights.
I mounted the two relays just behind the battery on the vacant relay mount points next to an existing one. The relays are earthed directly to the battery terminal and the +ve power source into the relay terminals comes directly from the battery terminal.
I ran four wires from the relays to the underneath of the fuse box. Two heavy(ish) ones (that go into the fuse box) and two light ones. I wound them with tape covering. All the wires were solder joined with shrink wrap covering.
